Flute Restoration and Repair

Small corked tenon

My primary service is restoring and reconditioning antique wooden flutes as closely as possible to their original playing capabilities and to reduce the impact of the aging process upon them. Modern simple-system or Irish wooden flutes require the same repair and restoration techniques that are used on antique instruments, and I happily work on those as well.

Here is a sampling of what I do:

  • General clean and oil
  • Crack repair
  • Re-corking/re-threading tenons
  • Repadding
  • Key repair/refabrication
  • Ring replacement
  • Tuning slide work
  • Embouchure re-shaping/touch-up
  • Replacement and adjustment of head corks
  • Body work
  • Bore polishing
  • More...

Rates

F Natural

$50 minimum, plus shipping-- this covers the cost of the first hour of work (which includes assessment and quote), bookkeeping, and handling. $30 for each additional hour beyond that.

Once I receive your flute, I'll call or email you with an estimate. If any special materials are needed that can't be absorbed by my hourly rate, I will try to include them in the initial quote. Also, if I start working and encounter something radically different from what I've assessed in my quote, I'll contact you before proceeding with any additional repairs.
